How Neck Problems Can Cause Headaches

A question I frequently get at our chiropractic clinic in North Ogden is: “Can my headaches come from my neck?” Sometimes this is asked because the patient has been experiencing neck pain at the same time as their chronic headaches, but other times it is because they have no neck pain but heard that chiropractors can help headaches.

PAIN IN THE NECK

Whether or not you are experiencing neck pain, it is possible your headaches are associated with a problem in your neck. Restrictions in the joints of your spine can prevent your neck from moving fully and create irregular movement patterns during your everyday activities.

Tension headaches can develop with tightness at the top of the neck and into the back of the head. Pressure onto the nerves here, called the greater occipital nerves, is sometimes called occipital neuralgia and can create pain or other symptoms into the back, sides, or front of the head. A tension headache is the most common form of headache, and can respond well to chiropractic treatment.

WHAT I’LL DO FOR YOUR HEADACHES

The chiropractic adjustments I provide to your neck will help restore proper movement to the spine while relieving the pressure on the nerves that cause headaches. Additional therapies we apply to the muscles and nerves will increase their healing ability and reduce pain. During my examination I will look into other possible causes such as related injuries, diet, posture, TMJ dysfunction (jaw problems), and ear/sinus issues.
