Have you ever experienced a headache that starts in the back of the head by the top of the neck, then travels up towards your forehead or temples? This is one presentation of what is commonly called a tension headache. There is so much that can be said on chiropractic treatment for headaches. But we will keep this brief and just focus on one part of the big picture.

Sometimes the joints in the upper neck will become stiff and stop moving properly. This may happen from one big injury or from small repetitive traumas to the neck. These joint restrictions in the neck will affect the muscles and nerves in the area and may even create swelling or inflammation. It may also decrease the normal cervical curve (the “C” shaped curve of the neck) which compounds the problem and brings additional risks to the intervertebral discs, nerves, and spinal cord.
A frequently irritated group of muscles at the back of the head, commonly called the suboccipitals, often have tension from the “normal” posture of sitting at a desk, looking at our phones, or working with our arms in front of us. These tense muscles will push on nerves that pass through the upper neck and cause pain, throbbing, or even numbness into the head.
There are other areas associated with headaches and migraines, such as the shoulder and upper back. Many of the muscles here attach to the top of the neck and create tension when tight or injured – like after getting whiplash in a car accident.
