Have you ever hurt your hip, knee, or ankle and then started having pain in other places? Why does that happen and what can help it get better? Dr. Favero has had many patients with this dilemma and his thorough examination will help him determine what is causing these problems. He will then apply chiropractic treatments for the troubled areas that will bring you relief and lasting results.
Here are a few reasons why your hip might be hurting, and recommended treatments to help you return to your normal activities.
1) Hip pain because of a lower leg problem
- The cause: When we hurt our foot, ankle, knee, or leg we will usually walk a little differently while and even after it is in pain. This easily causes structures and tissues in other areas to become irritated and painful.
- The treatment: Addressing these problem areas can help resolve your hip pain and prevent it from returning. At our clinic in North Ogden we directly treat the foot, ankle, knee, and leg with chiropractic manipulations and advanced muscle/ligament therapies so your hip and back can function properly and avoid further irritation.
2) Irritation directly in the hip joint
- The cause: The hip joint (aka femoroacetabular joint) may have pain from degenerative changes in the bone or from irritation in the soft tissue structures surrounding the joint. Previous injuries can cause accelerated degeneration to a joint, though most of the time this occurs because of overuse or repetitive traumas.
- The treatment: Chiropractic adjustments to the joint help relieve pressure and increase movement at the hip. Focused treatment to the muscles and ligaments around the hip will reduce tightness and swelling while activating these structures to work properly. Dr. Favero has many ways of moving the hip, some gentle and others more vigorous. He will apply these based on patient tolerance and the severity of your condition.
3) Sacroiliac or pelvis injuries
- The cause: The pelvis is a complex area and includes two large joints between the hip bones and the bottom of the spine where it becomes cone-shaped at the tailbone. Injury to these sacroiliac joints (SI joints) can be a cause of sharp pains and can be worsened with normal activities such as sitting, walking, and prolonged standing.
- The treatment: Dr. Favero will examine the pelvis and lower spine to determine the main causes then apply a series of treatments to this important hub at the end of the spine. He may lay you on your side and bring the leg downward to open up the SI joint, or press directly on the joints while you are lying face down on the table. Electrical muscle stimulation to the area may provide additional relief, or he may apply other therapeutic modalities to help the soft tissues around the joints.
4) Low back pain or problems in the lumbar spine
- The cause: The lumbar spine is just above the hip bones and below the ribs and has important muscles and ligaments that help stabilize your body to stand and move properly. There are also vital nerves that exit the spinal cord at each level of the lumbar spine that are responsible for strength, sensation, and sustenance to the legs and other areas. You may experience weakness, pain, or other symptoms when these structures are damaged with injury or irritated by spinal disc problems.
- The treatment: Chiropractors work to effectively mobilize the lumbar spine and then directly address the discs, nerves, and soft tissues with applicable therapies. Spinal disc decompression (aka mechanical traction) is an effective treatment at Favero Chiropractic that can help the discs heal, reduce pressure on the nerves, and relieve pain in the back and legs.
