Does dieting put you ON EDGE?

stress from dieting, funny squirrel

Why does dieting just make us “hangry”? We all know obesity will hurt us in the end and most of us are trying to do something about it. But it’s not smooth sailing and somewhere along the way we start showing signs of irritation or “being on edge”.

One big reason is that when we make a push to lose weight, the fat cells in our bodies – called adipocytes – might push back. They can fill to 3-4 times their normal size before our body will create more fat cells. But once the number of adipocytes increases, it will always try to stick around that same number. From then on we have more fat cells wanting to be fed and nudging us to give them what they want.

Fat cells, called adipocytes, make up the fatty tissue in our bodies

Our bodies also have to work harder when there is more fat lining our insides, and it will eventually cause problems in our liver, heart, kidneys, and joints. The further along we get, the more risks we face.

So make a little change starting today! More fruits and veggies and less of the milkshakes and fast food. As we’ve discussed earlier, our diet has a bigger effect on our weight than exercise does (see post here). Though changing what we eat and drink can be hard, it brings such good results! Expect some difficulty as you get started, so you can avoid frustration when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Here’s the good news: our bodies have a powerful ability to change and heal. Don’t give up on your body, because being well is within your grasp. I work with people to overcome obesity-related Diabetes, and find that it is always easier to start today than tomorrow.
